Biography
Heather Warren is an associate at the firm. Heather joined the firm as an articling student after graduating from University of McGill’s Faculty of Law in 2022 with a Juris Doctorate and a Bachelor of Civil Law. At graduation, she was awarded the Rosa B. Gualtieri Prize, which is awarded to a graduating student deemed to be of high academic standing and exceptional personal qualities as demonstrated throughout the course of studies. Before pursuing a B.C.L. and J.D., Heather earned a B.A. Psychology (with distinction) at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Heather is a member of the Alberta Bar, as well as the Yukon bar, and has defended cases in Alberta, the Yukon, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.
While in law school, Heather focused on criminal and constitutional law, and worked as a teaching assistant for first year constitutional law students. She completed courses in criminal procedure, criminal evidence, administrative law, and criminal trial advocacy. She additionally focused on specialized seminars including on sentencing and homicide cases, and wrote independent research papers on the prison system and the evolution of sexual assault law.
Heather has also been extensively involved in civil liberties and human rights projects. Most notably, she volunteered on UCLA Law’s Covid-19 Behind Bars Data Project, which served to shed light on the reality of the pandemic in carceral facilities. In law school, she also enjoyed a position as a caseworker at a student-run legal information clinic. During law school, Heather was awarded the G.I. Smith Memorial Trust Award for volunteer involvement in public and community affairs. Heather was a member of McGill University’s third-place winning team at the Gale Cup, Canada’s premier national bilingual mooting competition.
Heather’s articling focused largely on criminal appeals, and her practice has since grown to include both trial and appellate work. At the trial level, Heather has defended clients charged with domestic violence, fraud, drug offences, firearms offences, and sexual assault. She has argued at all levels of Court in Alberta, including at the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Appeal. In her appellate practice, Heather has appealed many verdicts, including vehicle offences, fraud, sexual assault, drug and firearm offences, and homicide.
